Frequently asked questions
Answers to common questions about translation, certification and getting your documents accepted.
What types of document certification are available?
There are several types of document certification and translation certification, depending on the purpose of use and the requirements of the receiving authority. Common types include:
Translation certification by a translator or translation company
Notarial certification by a Notarial Services Attorney
Document legalization by the Department of Consular Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand
Certification by an embassy or consulate
Certification by the authority that originally issued the document
The appropriate type of certification depends on the requirements of the receiving authority. Before proceeding, we recommend confirming with the relevant authority which type of certification is required.
How does standard translation differ from certified translation?
Standard translation converts your document into another language. Certified translation adds a signed statement or company certification that confirms the translation is accurate and complete. You usually need certified translation for official use, such as visas, courts, schools, and government offices.
What is translation certification by a translator or translation company?
It is a process in which the translator or translation provider confirms that the translation was prepared from the original document or a copy provided by the client and accurately reflects the source document. Some authorities may not accept this certification alone and may require further certification or legalization, so please check the receiving authority's requirements first.
What is notarial certification?
Notarial certification in Thailand is performed by a lawyer who has completed the required training and is authorized by the Lawyers Council of Thailand. It may include certification of signatures, certification of copies, and certification that a person signed a document in the presence of the Notarial Services Attorney.
When do you need legalization from the Department of Consular Affairs?
You may need legalization when a receiving authority asks for official validation of your document for use in Thailand or overseas. The exact steps depend on the document type and where you will submit it. In many cases, translation comes first, followed by any required notarization or legalization.
